What is a Boom Barrier?

A boom barrier — also called a boom gate or barrier gate — is a motorized horizontal arm mounted on a fixed housing that controls vehicle entry and exit at a gate. When an authorized signal is received — an RFID tag, a recognized number plate, an access card, or a remote trigger — the arm rises to let the vehicle pass, then lowers automatically once the vehicle clears the loop sensor on the other side. It is the single most widely deployed vehicle access control device in India, used everywhere from residential society gates to factory compounds and toll plazas.

How Does an Automatic Boom Barrier Work?

An automatic boom barrier operates through four steps at every vehicle pass:

Detection — An inductive loop sensor embedded in the road surface detects the vehicle's presence as it approaches the gate.

Identification — The system identifies the vehicle using a connected UHF RFID reader (reading a windshield tag from 10–15 metres) or an ANPR camera (capturing the number plate).

Authorization — The access controller checks the vehicle against its approved list. If authorized, it sends a relay signal to the barrier motor.

Actuation — The boom arm rises within 2–4 seconds, the vehicle passes, and the arm lowers automatically once the exit loop sensor confirms clearance. The event — vehicle ID, timestamp, gate — is logged automatically.

MB100 vs MB200 — Which Boom Barrier is Right for You?

Choose the MB100 when the gate is a single lane and traffic is moderate, such as a small office, a clinic or a society with one entry. Choose the MB200 when the opening is wider, when two lanes share one arm, or when the gate sees steady traffic through the day. Gate width usually settles it first. RFID or ANPR: what to fit at the gate

Most society and factory gates end up using both. Resident and staff vehicles carry a UHF windshield tag, and the UHF integrated reader lifts the arm before the car reaches the barrier. Visitors, vendors and one-off deliveries have no tag, so an ANPR camera reads the plate or the guard checks the vehicle and triggers the barrier by hand. Both feed a single access controller, which decides who gets in and keeps the entry log.

Three details decide whether this works in daily use. First, test the read range with a real tag on a real windscreen, because metallised tint film can weaken the read. Second, fix the tag in the same spot on every vehicle, usually behind the rear-view mirror, so the reader sees a consistent angle. • Gate width Measure the clear opening and match the arm length to it. The MB100 is for standard single-lane entries and the MB200 covers openings up to 6 metres.
• Peak traffic Count vehicles per hour at the busiest time, not the daily average. Ask for the duty cycle of the model you are considering.
• Motor type Brushless DC motors suit busy gates because they run quietly and are built for frequent cycles. For a gate with a handful of movements an hour, arm length and safety sensors matter more than motor type.
• Weather exposure Outdoor gates need a housing rated for rain and dust, and a foundation that drains during the monsoon.
• Safety sensors A safety loop under the arm path and a photocell stop the arm from coming down on a vehicle.
• Trigger input Confirm the barrier accepts a relay trigger from the RFID reader or ANPR system you plan to use.
